HKViz Privacy Policy

HKViz is a web application and mod to use with the game Hollow Knight and is developed by Oliver Gstöttenbauer ("we", "us", "our") as part of his bachelor thesis. It is not affiliated with TeamCherry, the developer of Hollow Knight, in any way. This privacy policy explains what data is collected by HKViz and how it is used.

What data do we collect?

Personal identification information:

  • email address (collected from all login methods)
  • usernames / social handles (collected only when using discord or google to login)

Time-stamped Hollow Knight gameplay data / gameplay events (tracked via the mod)

  • Player location within the game world
  • Abilities used
  • Data contained in the save file over time like (even before the game writes this data to the save file):
    • owned in-game currencies like geo, essence, health, soul, ...
    • collected / equipped items like charms, mask shards, soul vessels, ...

Interactions within the web application

  • The names, tags and other metadata you add to your gameplays
  • Your likes, views and other interactions with gameplays

The mod does not collect any other information besides gameplay data.

Children's Personal Information

We do not knowingly collect any personal information from anyone under the age of 16. If you are under the age of 16, please do not submit any personal information through our web application or mod. If you have reason to believe that somebody under the age of 16 has provided personal information to us through our web application or mod, please contact us via support@hkviz.org and we will delete that information from our databases.

How do we collect your data?

You directly provide us with most of the data we collect. We collect data and process data when you:

  • Register for our web application or inside the HKViz mod.
  • When participating in interviews or surveys conducted by us.
  • Interact with or view our website via your browser's cookies.
  • Use the HKViz mod to upload your gameplay data.

We also receive your data indirectly from the following sources:

  • Discord (if the discord login is used)
  • Google (if the google login is used)

How will we use your data?

We collect your data so that we can:

  • Identify you as a user of our web application or mod.
  • Identify your gameplay data as belonging to you, so that you can view it in the web application and manage its visibility.
  • Email you with login links and other information about the web application, research project or mod.
  • Allow you to analyze your gameplay data in the web application and/or share it with other users.
  • Allow you to view and analyze gameplay data of other users, if they have shared it.
  • Allow aggregated anonymized gameplay data over many gameplay sessions to be viewed by other users. Such as viewing the average time spent in a specific game area by players during their first playthrough.
  • Use your gameplay and usage data to do research and publish research papers. All data will always be reported in anonymized form, unless you specifically give us permission to do otherwise.

How do we store your data?

We securely store your data on servers located in the EU and the US. All data is encrypted at rest and in transit.

  • Your user data and gameplay metadata is stored in databases distributed in the EU hosted by PlanetScale and Turso. Backups are performed daily on PlanetScale and with every change in Turso and are stored in the EU.
  • Your gameplay data is stored in a database on servers in the EU hosted by Cloudflare.
  • All personal data you provide is processed by Vercel and Cloudflare as hosting providers.
    • The processing of your personal data on behalf of Vercel may happen in the US under the legal basis of the EU Standard Contractual Clauses (SCCs) described in GDPR article 46(2)(c) and (3)(a). More information can be found in the Vercel Privacy Policy and in the Vercel Data Processing Addendum.
    • The processing of your personal data on behalf of Cloudflare may happen in the US or other countries outside the EEA under the legal basis of the EU Standard Contractual Clauses (SCCs) described in GDPR article 46(2)(c) and (3)(a).
      More information can be found in the Cloudflare Privacy Policy and the Cloudflare Data Processing Addendum.
  • If you choose to use the Discord login, your data is processed by Discord Inc. ("Discord"). More information can be found in the Discord Privacy Policy.
  • If you choose to use the Google login, your data is processed by Google LLC ("Google"). More information can be found in the Google Privacy Policy.
  • All emails written to us and sent by us, are processed and stored by Apple Inc. ("Apple"). More information can be found in the Apple Privacy Policy.

We will keep your data for as long as you have an account on our web application or mod. You are free to delete your account at any time. If you choose to delete your account, use the account deletion page. Your account and all associated data will be deleted within 30 days.

If you choose to participate in the research project, your data will be automatically deleted once the research project is finished unless

  • You choose to delete your account before the research project is finished.
  • You choose to keep the data after the research project is finished at signup.

What are your data protection rights?

We would like to make sure you are fully aware of all of your data protection rights. Every user is entitled to the following:

The right to access – You have the right to request us for copies of your personal data. We may charge you a small fee for this service.

The right to rectification – You have the right to request that we correct any information you believe is inaccurate. You also have the right to request us to complete the information you believe is incomplete.

The right to erasure – You have the right to request that we erase your personal data, under certain conditions.

The right to restrict processing – You have the right to request that we restrict the processing of your personal data, under certain conditions.

The right to object to processing – You have the right to object to our processing of your personal data, under certain conditions.

The right to data portability – You have the right to request that we transfer the data that we have collected to another organization, or directly to you, under certain conditions.

What are cookies?

Cookies are text files placed on your computer to collect standard Internet log information and visitor behavior information. When you visit our websites, we may collect information from you automatically through cookies or similar technology.

Our web application contains links to other websites. Our privacy policy applies only to our web application and mod, so if you click on a link to another website, you should read their privacy policy.

Changes to our privacy policy

We keep our privacy policy under regular review and place any updates on this web page. This privacy policy was last updated on January 29, 2025.

Update history

February 10, 2025:

  • Turso has been added as a database hosting provider. Data stored at PlanetScale will be migrated to Turso. The data will continue to be stored within the EU.
  • Cloudflare has been added as a hosting provider in addition to Vercel.
  • Added information about run metadata and interactions to collected data.
  • Generalized data usage to include future research projects.

April 6, 2024:

  • Turso was removed as a database provider. No data was migrated to Turso. The databases are still hosted by PlanetScale and Cloudflare.

April 4, 2024:

  • Contact mail was changed to support@hkviz.org, the old mail will continue to work.

March 14, 2024:

  • Turso was added as a database hosting provider. Data stored at PlanetScale will be migrated to Turso. Data will not be migrated to Turso before the 5th of May 2024. The data will continue to be stored within the EU.
